Description
The Town Hall located at 81 High Street in Inverurie was designed by J. Russell Mackenzie and completed in 1862. It features a Baroque style influenced by the Vanbrugh-Hawksmoor school. The building is two stories high with a seven-bay granite ashlar front, where the end bays are slightly advanced. The design includes a simple treatment with lions at the blocking course and giant Roman-Doric pilasters at the center. The arched windows are rusticated on the ground floor, and the central wide bay has a niche flanked by narrow windows. Above this, there is a balustrated parapet topped with a fanciful diagonally set cupola inspired by Spanish Baroque architecture. An addition for a library and museum was made in 1911 by Harbourne Maclennan of Jenkins and Marr. The building also houses a bell designed by J. C. Wilson, which dates back to 1862.
