Description

The Furnace and Foundry, Works Building with Smithy at the Great North of Scotland Locomotive Works on Harlaw Road in Inverurie was designed by William Pickersgill between 1898 and 1900. This single-storey building has a rectangular plan and an M-gabled roof, with some small later additions. It features a steel frame and is predominantly clad in Aberdeen-bond granite, with coursed and snecked squared rubble on the south elevation and corrugated metal cladding on the east end of the north elevation. The building has an eaves cornice and raking cornices on the gables.

The west elevation consists of six bays. In the first, second, and fifth bays from the left, there are two-leaf doors (timber-boarded on the far left and metal for the others) set in large openings, with the far left opening being a later alteration from an original window. These doors have moulded lintels and 8-paned vertically divided overlights. The third, fourth, and sixth bays feature large 48-pane vertically oriented windows with a central timber mullion and broad moulded transom, along with glazed gables that are vertically divided.

On the north elevation, to the left of the granite-clad section, there are seven large windows of varying sizes, all with vertically oriented glazing patterns. The five largest windows have broad moulded transoms, and two windows on the right have additional central timber mullions. To the right, there is a small single-storey mono-pitch extension with a brick ridge stack and a tall granite gable-end stack.

The east elevation also has six bays. The second and fifth bays from the left contain large openings that are largely blocked with timber boarding and have small sliding doors, along with 8-paned vertically divided overlights. The first, third, fourth, and fifth bays feature large 48-pane vertically oriented windows with a central timber mullion and broad moulded transom, while the gables are timber-boarded.

The south elevation is mostly blank, with a single-storey pitched-roofed extension at the center. The building has an M-pitched roof, primarily covered with corrugated metal, while the north section of the roof and extensions are finished with dark grey slate. Continuous rooflight strips run along the ridge and lower pitch on both sides of the north pitch.

The interior, which was not seen in 2003, features light steel roof trusses.
