Description

The Carriage and Wagon Shop at the Great North of Scotland Locomotive Works on Harlaw Road in Inverurie was built between 1898 and 1900 by William Pickersgill. This high single-storey workshop, which has a mezzanine floor in some areas, features a very large rectangular plan and a pitched roof with a saw-tooth profile designed for north-light. The structure is primarily made of steel framing and is clad in Aberdeen-bond granite, with timber fascia boards along the eaves and gables.

On the south elevation, there are nine bays with three groups of three large openings, each featuring 8-light overlights, except for the first opening on the left. Modern metal shutter doors have been added to the second, third, fifth, and eighth openings from the left. The first opening from the left has been blocked with Aberdeen-bond granite and a window, while the remaining openings have been filled with modern blockwork.

The west elevation consists of 24 bays, each originally having a single window, although the windows in the ninth, twelfth, and fourteenth bays from the left are blocked. There are also blocked doorways in the sixth, thirteenth, and twentieth bays. From the seventeenth to the twenty-fourth bays, there is an additional window at the upper level, and each bay features a single louvred opening in the gable.

The east elevation also has 24 bays, with a small single-storey extension in the center that has a mono-pitched roof. Each bay predominantly contains a single window, along with a louvred opening in the gable.

The north elevation was not visible in 2003. The glazing throughout is predominantly 8-pane in timber frames, and the roof features a 24-bay slate and glazed north-light design. The building also includes predominantly cast-iron rainwater goods and hoppers. The interior, which was not seen in 2003, features light steel roof trusses.
