Description
The Old Free Church in Aberchirder, designed by James Henderson in 1841, is a two-storey hall church with a gabled rectangular plan. It features an octagonal four-stage entrance tower on the south side and a single-storey gabled vestry to the north. The building is constructed of random rubble with ashlar dressings and an ashlar tower, and it has tall round-arched windows.
The tower's entrance on the south side includes a four-panelled two-leaf door with a blinded fanlight above, flanked by four additional fixed doors. Above this, there are tall, slender round-arched windows set in pilastered bays with a cornice. The third stage features a clock with a moulded surround, and the bell tower above has eight round-arched louvred narrow openings, an eaves course, a cornice, and an ogival lead roof topped with a wrought-iron weathervane.
The nave is flanked by single windows on either side of the entrance tower, with four windows on the east and west elevations, and two smaller stained glass windows on the north side. The adjoining vestry to the north is a single-storey structure that has been adapted to accommodate the north windows of the nave. It features two round-arched windows on the north side, with a door to the east and a window on both the east and west sides.
The church has lying-pane and border glazing, grey slate roofing, and coped ashlar skews and a stack for the vestry, along with a later brick stack and flue on the north elevation of the nave.
Inside, the pulpit is located to the north and features an arcaded balustrade and a panelled sounding board above with a small bracketed canopy. Stained glass depicting New Testament scenes can be found in the flanking windows. There is a panelled raked gallery supported on cast-iron columns on three sides, painted pews, and pine altar furniture. The entrance hall contains marble memorial plaques dedicated to Mr and Mrs Stronach and Rev D Henry.
The boundary wall surrounding the churchyard is made of random rubble with an ashlar coping.
