Description
The Mill of Foveran is a former girnal, likely dating to 1609, although this is at an angle to the compass. It is a single-storey building with a basement and attic, constructed of rubble with sandstone dressings around the openings. Some of the sandstone dressings have been replaced with cement, and the original bars to the openings have been removed. The roof has straight skews topped with St. Andrew crosses carved in sunk relief.
The mill was remodelled in the mid-19th century, with a consoled cornice inserted at attic floor level. The eastern front was made symmetrical with four windows, a central door, and two dormers above, and steps were added. A datestone dated 1720 is now detached from the building. The mill has been raised in height and is now gutted of its internal workings.
A reconstruction in the early 19th century was probably undertaken by James Massie.
