Description
Girdleness Lighthouse, located on Greyhope Road in Aberdeen, was designed by Robert Stevenson and completed in 1833. The lighthouse is circular and tapered, featuring a corbelled gallery on the third floor and an iron cupola at the top. The main light was modified in 1847 and again in 1890.
The approach to the lighthouse is flanked by flat-roofed single-storey lodges, with an archway situated between them. Additionally, there is a fog siren, dating from around 1880 to 1890, which faces southeast. This cast-iron siren horn moves in a semi-circle and is mounted on a cast iron concrete block podium. It is powered by compressed air supplied from an engine house located to the north of the road.
