Description
This is a two-and-a-half storey, two-bay house, built between 1840 and 1859. It is located third from the left at the southwest end of a terrace on the northwest side of Great George’s Street in Warrenpoint. The building is part of a terrace that has been significantly altered, impacting the overall character of the street.
The house has a pitched roof covered with natural slate, featuring an advanced eaves course and half-round plastic gutters. A red brick corbelled chimney is located on the party wall shared with the adjacent building, HB16/11/034B. Two wall-head dormers are set into the front roof pitch, mirroring the main roof’s design with plain timber bargeboards. Each dormer contains a segmental-headed sash window with horns and single glazing panes. The principal elevation of the house faces southeast towards the street. The walls are smooth rendered and painted, with a smooth rendered and unpainted chamfered base course. A narrow raised stucco band runs up the left-hand side, across the top at dormer sill level, and down the right-hand side. The entrance is located on the ground floor to the right, set within a semicircular opening framed by a smooth rendered architrave. The door itself is a modern four-panelled stained timber door (raised and fielded) with a plain fanlight above, lacking glazing bars. To the left of the entrance is a 1/1 sliding sash window with horns, painted cill and architrave, mirroring the door’s detailing. All windows are of this style unless otherwise stated. A window is present on the first floor in each bay; the window to the right (over the entrance) is slightly narrower. A small paved area is located at the front of the house. The left gable is completely abutted by the adjacent building, HB16/11/034B, while the right gable is abutted by HB16/11/034D. The rear elevation was not inspected.
The house does not appear on the 1834 town map, but is shown on the 1861 map. The 1863 Valuation Book describes it as measuring 7.5 yards by 8.75 yards, with two and two-thirds storeys, plus a 1.5 storey return. This matches the building as it stands today.
