Description
This is a two-and-a-half-story, two-bay house built between 1840 and 1859, located fourth from the left in a terrace on the northwest side of Great George’s Street, Warrenpoint. The building was altered and retains no architectural or historical interest.
The left bay features a two-and-a-half-story canted bay window, while the right bay has a wall-head dormer. The roof is pitched and covered in natural slate, with an advanced eaves course supporting half-round plastic gutters. A red brick corbelled chimney and a narrow concrete skew are visible on the left party wall, shared with the adjacent building (HB16/11/034C). The canted bay window has a slate roof with terracotta ridges, and the dormer features a pitched roof with plain timber bargeboard.
The principal elevation faces southeast towards the street. The walls are rendered and painted, with a chamfered base course and moulded string courses to the ground and first floors, rising over the segmental-headed openings. The entrance is at ground-floor right, featuring a modern stained timber four-panelled door with a plain transom. A segmental-headed window with stop-chamfered arris is positioned above the door at first-floor level; it contains a modern uPVC top-hung casement window with a painted cill. All other windows are identical. The left bay's ground and first floors each feature a pair of windows to the front, and a single window to each side. The top-floor openings mirror those below but have flat heads and are reduced in height. A low dwarf wall marks the front area. The left gable is entirely adjoined by the neighboring building (HB16/11/034C). The rear elevation was not inspected, and the right gable is completely abutted by another property (HB16/11/034E).
The building does not appear on the 1834 town map but is shown on the 1861 map. It was described in the 1863 Valuation Book as measuring 7.25 yards by 8.75 yards, with two-and-two-thirds stories and a 1.5-story return. This is undoubtedly the same building that currently occupies the site.
