8-10 Upper Water Street, (formerly 8-10 Abbey Way), Newry, Co Down, BT34 1DJ

The present building at 8-10 Upper Water Street, Newry, is a modern structure of no particular architectural interest, replacing an earlier building that stood on the site. The original property, constructed around 1800, was demolished and rebuilt.

The original building, surveyed in 1969, comprised two houses of three floors with cellars and attics. It was built of squared and coursed granite with a moulded eaves cornice and a slated roof. Number 8 had five windows, with glazing bars to the first and second floors. The central entrance was flanked by unfluted Doric columns with entablature blocks supporting an open bed mould pediment framing a semicircular fanlight. To the south of the entrance was a shop front with three semicircular arched openings and V-channelled piers rising to moulded imposts. The central door, fanlight, and window heads had small-paned glazing. Number 10 had a cart entrance, now inappropriately fitted with a shop front, and was eight windows wide.

The building appeared on the 1835 Ordnance Survey map and was valued at £22 in 1838. The 1863 valuation described it as three and a half storeys high. The property was originally known as 8-10 Abbey Way; the street name was later changed to Upper Water Street. The building lies within the Carneyhough townland and is situated within a conservation area.
