Description
Figurative world war memorial comprising a stepped base supporting a tall pedestal upon which stands a statue of a soldier, in grounds at front of Mourne Presbyterian Church. Steps are six in number and square in plan. Of finely-dressed granite, they diminish in length as they rise. At top is a narrow moulded granite basecourse upon which rests a finely-dressed white marble pedestal. This has a plinth with moulded chamfer and small raised scrolls on front and left sides (which also contain text). The dado tapers slightly inwards towards top. All faces have applied text (in individual lead letters) commemorating those members of the congregation who served and who fell in the 1914-18 war. The names of congregation members who fell in the second world war have also been added to front of plinth, and the names of those who have been killed since then to left cheek of plinth. At front top of pedestal is an embossed laurel wreath. Pedestal finished with a projecting moulded coping which forms the statue base. Statue is in marble and represents a full-size soldier in battle uniform and wearing a tin helmet. Both hands rest on the butt of his rifle, the barrel of which rests on his left boot. A marble post in the form of a tree trunk shorn of its branches forms a strengthening pier at the back of the statue. This trunk is inscribed ‘JFMD 23’.
