Sundial, Mourne Presbyterian Churchyard, Greencastle Street, Kilkeel, Newry, Co Down

This is a commemorative sundial associated with the earlier building that preceded the present Mourne Presbyterian Church. Located within the graveyard to the southeast of the church, it is situated to the left when approaching from Greencastle Street. The sundial consists of a finely-dressed, octagonal granite pedestal, formed in one piece, set on a square concrete base, itself placed over three roughly dressed granite paving slabs. A bronze dial, complete with a gnomon, tops the pedestal. The dial's face features the eight cardinal compass points, depicted with foliage, and Roman numerals around its outer edge. An inscription around the top outer edge reads "The gift of Robt Wallace, Newry, to the dissenting congregation of Kerkeel in Mourne. The Rev. M […] minister". The inscription on the bottom outer edge states "Made by G. Adams, […], London […] makers to his highness the Prince of Wales."

Presented to the congregation in 1757 by Robert Wallace, a Newry merchant, the sundial was likely a memorial to his father, Rev. Charles Wallace. The sundial has been relocated at least twice and is now situated close to its original placement.
