Description

This is a former drinking trough of significant historical interest, reflecting a late 19th-century national effort to improve animal welfare. It is currently situated on a traffic island at the junction of Knockchree Avenue and Greencastle Street in Kilkeel, Newry, County Down, although its original location is uncertain. It is not known if any similar troughs were erected elsewhere in Ireland.

The trough itself is a one-piece construction resting on plinth blocks, all crafted from finely-dressed granite. The bottom edges of both faces are stop-chamfered between the supporting piers, with a rounded arris to each end. An incised inscription on the front reads: ‘BE KIND AND MERCIFUL TO ALL ANIMALS / METROPOLITAN CATTLE TROUGH ASSOCIATION / 70 VICTORIA STREET SW.’ A water spout tap is set into the right-hand side. At the rear, the supporting plinths are flanked by half-round granite posts with rounded heads. A smaller, shallow granite trough is located underneath, between the supporting piers, intended for smaller animals. The structure is now used as a municipal flower planter.

The refined granite and inscription suggest a date between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Metropolitan Drinking Fountain and Cattle Trough Association was founded in 1859 by Samuel Gurney MP, nephew of Elizabeth Fry, and initially focused on providing free clean drinking water to combat diseases like cholera. In 1867, the association broadened its remit to include livestock and other animals. The organisation is believed to have ceased operating, with its last known address in Bexley, Kent, now a private hotel.
