Masonic Hall, 49 Greencastle Street, Kilkeel, Newry, Co Down, BT34 3PZ

The building is a two-storey, three-bay hall constructed between 1900 and 1919, situated on the south side of Greencastle Street in Kilkeel. It displays unusual detailing for a building of its type.

The hall has a hipped natural slate roof with overhanging eaves and boarded soffits, complemented by half-round metal rainwater goods. A modern, rendered chimney rises from the eaves on the left elevation. The walls are painted wet dash, featuring raised V-channelled applied quoins to the ground floor, supporting a moulded architrave that spans the façade between the ground and first floors. The main entrance, in the centre of the ground floor, is a six-panelled, painted timber door with Edwardian detailing applied to the lock rail, recessed within a quoined opening and topped with a plain rendered lintel. To the left and right of the entrance are pairs of 1/1 sliding sash windows that share a common sash box. The lower sashes of these windows have an unusual segmental headed meeting rail, and they are united by a painted render cill, with stepped quoins and a lintel similar to that of the entrance. On the first floor, a single exposed box sliding sash window is positioned centrally, close to the eaves, with timber mouldings applied to the exposed box. Pairs of similarly detailed sashes flank this central window, positioned above the ground floor windows. Below the central first-floor window is a granite panel with chamfered edges etched with the Masonic emblem.

The left elevation is blank with no quoins visible. The right elevation is partially abutted by a flat-roofed return, visible at the rear, and is otherwise blank. A single-storey gabled hall abuts the rear elevation. The remaining rear wall is dashed and features a small window set over the left pitch of the hall. This hall has a pitched natural slate roof, dashed walls matching the main block, and an extension to its left side. The remains of the left side’s cheek feature a blind semicircular headed arch, constructed with V-channelled rendered jambs and voussoirs. The small extension is dashed and painted to match the main block, with narrow timber casement windows on its side wall. The rear gable is blank, and the right elevation was not inspected.

Decorative wrought iron railings, with decorative gateposts and a central pedestrian gate, enclose the front of the building. A modern vehicle gateway is situated at the right end. The building was shown on the 1901 Ordnance Survey map and first recorded in the valuation revision book of 1902, under the name of the 'Society of Freemasons'.
