Description

A pair of single-storey/ two-bay direct-entry thatched vernacular dwellings with extensions at rear and side, directly on south side of Greencastle Street. No.59 is at left (as viewed from road) and No.61 at right. Traditional pitched thatch roof with wrap-over ridge, rendered verges and wired eaves; two rods at ridge and one at eaves. There are two chimneys both smooth rendered; one is on right gable and other is on party wall between the two properties. Wet cement-dashed walls. No.61 has a vertically sheeted door, and a 1/1 sliding sash window to either side, also with concrete cills. Right gable is abutted by a single storey extension. It has a flat roof (parapeted to street and side) and half-round gutters at rear. Rendered walls. Its wall to street is blank. Its end gable has a two-pane painted timber casement window. Rear elevation blank. The rear elevation is abutted by a short link block to annex at rear. This connects with a one-storey building set parallel with the main block. It has a flat roof and is without openings. The exposed section of the main block has, at right, two 2/2 sliding sashes. The wall to left of link is blank, but retains an earlier roughcast whitewashed render. Part of the rear slope of the thatch has been cut away in preparation for a new link block, the construction of which has not yet started. The annex with which this link connects is set parallel with the main block. It has a shallow corrugated asbestos monopitch roof and half-round metal gutters. There is a small galvanised metal water tank at right end. Cement rendered walls. Its right cheek (as viewed from rear) as a 2x3 metal-framed casement window and its rear wall has two 1/1 sash, arranged about a chimney breast which rises high over the eaves and finishes in concrete blockwork. Its left wall has a glazed plywood door at left and a casement window at right. The roof timberwork is part original.
