Belvedere, W of 26 Church Road, Forkhill, Newry, Co Armagh, BT35 9RS

Belvedere is an imposing, single-storey circular belvedere constructed between 1840 and 1859, situated on an elevated, rocky outcrop at the foot of Slievebrack Mountain in the townland of Shean, near Forkhill, Newry. It is undoubtedly a landscape feature associated with Forkhill House. The belvedere is built of granite and shale rubble stone with a crenellated parapet, now roofless. It has an advanced rubble stone basecourse and a dressed granite platband below parapet level, where the wall slightly advances. Openings are provided to each cardinal point, each with a granite lintel and cill, except the western opening, which serves as a door. The setting is high on a rocky outcrop, affording commanding views over the surrounding countryside and the Slieve Gullion Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The structure first appeared on the 1862 Ordnance Survey map. The building exhibits architectural interest in its style, proportions, plan form, setting, and group value and possesses local historical interest. It is privately owned and currently used as a tower.
