Description

This is a substantially altered, single-storey, four-bay house situated on the south side of Old Bridge Road in the townland of Carrickastickan, near Forkhill, Newry. The house was likely constructed between 1820 and 1839, as indicated by its presence on an Ordnance Survey map of 1835.

The building is aligned northeast-southwest. It has a pitched roof covered in artificial slate, with two pebble-dashed chimneys topped with cement coping; one chimney sits on the party wall between the first and second bays, and the other between the second and third bays. Boxed timber eaves support half-round plastic rainwater goods. The walls are pebble-dashed, with a smooth rendered and painted base course. Modern, top-hung timber casement windows are set within narrow, painted and rendered reveals, and have concrete cills. The principal elevation faces northwest. The extreme right bay is wider than the others, and each bay contains a single window, though the window in the second bay is located to the right of a projecting porch, which is similarly detailed with a pitched roof. The porch’s left side contains the main entrance, accessed by three steps with a modern metal handrail. A modern timber door with a glazed side panel leads into the house, and narrow windows are located on the left cheek and right cheek of the porch. The left gable is blank. The rear elevation has a modern timber door and two windows to the right. The right gable contains a window centred within it.

The building's evolutionary development could not be determined from available valuation records due to an unspecific plot number on the valuation maps. A building is shown at this location on the 1835 Ordnance Survey map.
