Description

A group of outbuildings consisting of a two-storey/single-storey cart house, a single-storey animal house, and a single-storey stable block, enclosing a small yard, are located at the junction of Old Bridge Road and Carrickastickan Road in the townland of Carrickastickan. These buildings, while not individually of special architectural or historic merit, combine to form a pleasant roadside feature. They have lime-rendered rubble stone walls and are accessed from Old Bridge Road via a short lime-rendered rubble stone wall terminating in a pair of cylindrical gate piers.

The cart house has a two-storey block on the right and a single-storey cart house on the left, both with pitched roofs. The roof of the two-storey block is natural slate with half-round metal rainwater goods, while the roof of the cart house block is corrugated metal. The principal (north) elevation of the cart house features a tongue-and-groove (t+g) sheeted door in the centre of the two-storey block, above which is a 2/2 sliding sash window without a sill. The single-storey cart house section has a modern metal up-and-over door. The left and right gables are blank, and the rear elevation has a central loading door.

The stable block runs north-south along the east side of the yard, with its rear elevation facing Carrickastickan Road. It has a monopitched corrugated metal roof. The yard-facing (west) elevation of the stable block has three t+g sheeted half-doors, and the left gable is abutted by a slightly higher outbuilding with its gable to the road. The western face of this outbuilding has a top-hung timber casement window.

The single-storey animal house is aligned roughly north-south on the west side of the yard, with its right gable facing Old Bridge Road. It has a pitched natural slate roof that curves at the left end following the bend of the left gable wall, with metal rainwater goods. The yard-facing (east) elevation has two t+g sheeted half-doors.

Although buildings were shown on Ordnance Survey maps dating from 1835 and 1862, they did not have the same ground plan as the present buildings. The current configuration is likely of the late 19th century, as it is shown on the 1907 Ordnance Survey map. Construction is estimated to have occurred between 1880 and 1899. The buildings are of vernacular character.
