Dwelling SE of 43 Carrickastickan Road, Forkhill, Newry, Co Armagh, BT35 9RJ

This is a derelict, single-storey, two-bay vernacular dwelling located to the south-east of 43 Carrickastickan Road, near Forkhill, Newry, in County Armagh. The house is aligned north-west to south-east, positioned on a lane to the west of Carrickastickan Road. It likely dates from between 1840 and 1859.

The building has a pitched thatched roof, which is now covered with corrugated metal sheeting. Two brick chimneys are present – one on the central party wall and one on the right gable, although the gable chimney has now collapsed. There are no rainwater goods. The walls are constructed of lime-rendered rubble stone. The principal, south-west facing elevation features a box-mullioned sliding sash window with horns, a tiled cill, and a brick surround to the left bay. The right bay has a windbreak porch set to the left, with a flat cement roof and a door opening to the front face, and a window opening to the right without a cill. The left gable is blank, although ghost marks indicate the presence of a smaller, shallower outbuilding at a lower level. The rear elevation and right gable are also blank.

A ruinous outbuilding stands across the yard to the south. While a building is depicted on the Ordnance Survey map of 1835 at this location, it did not have the same ground plan as the current house. The house is shown on the Ordnance Survey map of 1862 and was valued at 10 shillings, a valuation that remained constant thereafter.
