Description

This is a three-arch bridge carrying a two-lane road over the Forkhill River, constructed between 1800 and 1819. While a noticeable feature of the landscape, it is not considered to be of outstanding architectural or historic significance, although it possesses some industrial archaeological interest.

The bridge’s eastern and central arches are wider and higher than the western arch. The voussoirs, or wedge-shaped stones forming the arches, are made of dressed granite. The piers supporting the arches, the spandrels (the triangular spaces between the arches and the roadway), and the parapets (low walls along the edges of the bridge) are built from random rubble, with the parapets finished with larger granite blocks along their tops. Cutwaters, which are angled projections designed to deflect water, made of cast concrete, are present on both sides at arch spring level. The bases of the abutments (supports at each end of the bridge) and piers are faced with concrete. The underside of the bridge soffits have been treated with 'Gunnited'. Long approach walls, partially faced with concrete, lead to each end of the bridge.

The bridge appears on the Ordnance Survey 6-inch map of 1835 and subsequent editions. It is owned by central government and is situated within the townlands of Shean and Carrickastickan.
