Description
The Cottage is a two-storey, three-bay house, likely dating from 1820 to 1839, situated on the west side of Main Street in Forkhill, Newry, County Armagh. The building has undergone considerable alteration and possesses limited architectural or historical significance.
The house is aligned roughly north-south and features a pitched concrete tiled roof with pebble-dashed chimneys on each gable. Boxed timber eaves incorporate plastic rainwater goods. The principal, east-facing elevation is pebble-dashed, with a smooth rendered and painted basecourse. Window openings have been enlarged and now contain modern timber side-hung casement windows with painted concrete sills. A modern glazed timber entrance door is located just left of centre.
The left gable abuts a single-storey addition that functions as another house. The addition's street-facing elevation has a door at the left end and a window to its right, with a blank face where it meets the original Cottage. The right gable has a window to the ground floor, centrally placed. The rear elevation, also detailed as a façade, contains modern casement windows and is abutted by a single-storey extension with a flat roof, positioned towards the left of centre.
A building at this location is shown on an Ordnance Survey map from 1835 and was then labelled a Police Barracks. According to the First Valuation book from 1836, this building measured 29 feet by 20 feet by 11 feet. By 1859, the Police Barracks had relocated elsewhere within the village. Subsequent Valuation Books offer an unclear picture of the site's subsequent development.
