Description
This is a bridge dating from approximately 1800 to 1819, typical of late 18th and early 19th century bridge construction. While its size gives it some architectural merit, its principal interest lies in the unusual arrangement of skew arches. The bridge carries the Newry to Hilltown road over the Clanrye River, employing four highly skewed segmental arches of increasing height. It is constructed of random granite rubble, with angled cutwaters on the upstream face, extending to arch spring level. The road and the arches rise from west to east. Modern rubble stone facings have been added to the abutments and at the bases of the piers. Both parapets have been rebuilt in random rubble, though the rebuilding is not of the highest quality, featuring inappropriately coursed stonework and a coped design. A bridge is depicted on an Ordnance Survey map from 1834, and was labelled "Derryleckagh Bridge" on the 1860 edition. The bridge is of industrial archaeological interest and holds local historical significance.
