Description
This is a one-and-a-half-storey, two-bay dwelling situated on a rise overlooking the Clanrye River to the west. While formerly of some historical interest due to its association with a recently demolished flour mill, this connection has been diminished by the mill’s demolition. A modern bungalow situated immediately adjacent to the southwest detracts from the building's setting.
The building appears on maps from 1902-1903, suggesting a late 19th-century date of erection; it is not depicted on the 1860 Ordnance Survey map. It was likely the former miller's house associated with the flour and corn mill built in 1842, though precise dating is difficult due to records of a previous miller’s house elsewhere on the property.
The roof is pitched and covered with natural slate, now in a dilapidated condition, and rests on single purlins and common rafters. A brick chimney is positioned centrally along the ridge. Half-round metal gutters are present on the front, supported by advanced granite eaves. The front elevation and the left (north gable) walls are constructed of squared granite rubble blocks, while the remaining walls are of random rubble. The principal elevation faces west towards the river. A tongue-and-groove sheeted door with a rectangular transom sits centrally. Exposed box sash windows are present in each bay; the sashes have been removed from the left bay, while 6/6 sashes remain in the right-hand window. Both window openings have granite cills. A blank left gable and a blank right gable complete the structure.
At the rear, the left side abuts a rendered concrete block kitchen annex with a monopitched corrugated asbestos roof, smooth-rendered walls, and metal fixed casement windows to the north and south gables. An exposed section of the rear wall is blank.
