Description
Glenvale Mill was a corn mill and kilns built in the 1840s on the site of an earlier mill, located on Benagh Road, Donaghmore, near Newry. The mill was erected by Mr Glenny. A 1972 survey describes the building as ruins of stone construction, partially harled with brick dressings, and featuring slated roofs topped by two pyramidal roof ventilators, varying in height from five to three storeys. It was powered by an internal 14ft diameter breast-shot water wheel situated in an adjoining three-storey building. A three-storey kiln abutted the east end of the mill, with another located on the north side. One kiln remained reasonably intact. A fire severely damaged the mill, destroying the roof, floors, and much of the machinery. The mill operated until the early 1960s. The buildings were demolished several years ago and no trace remains. The site possesses industrial archaeological interest.
