Ryan Bridge, Ryan Road, Rathfriland, Newry, Co Down, BT34 5BJ

The present Ryan Bridge, a single horizontal span of reinforced concrete, replaces an earlier structure. The deck rests on concrete abutments, and the bridge is bordered by vertical metal railings forming parapets. The original approach walls, built of rubble masonry, have been rebuilt and heavily pointed with cement.

The original bridge, likely dating from between 1780 and 1799, was a triple-arch masonry bridge over the Clanrye River. Depicted on the 1834 Ordnance Survey map, it comprised rubble masonry arches with triple keystones. The parapets were coped with flat stones and extended northwards as field walls; the north arch was apparently dry in typical conditions. The earlier bridge featured triangular cutwaters to the piers and a slightly hump-backed carriageway. The 1972 Historical Monuments and Buildings Board survey card described the original bridge as being of rubble masonry. The site possesses industrial archaeological interest, reflecting the replacement of the original structure.
