Description
The building is a single-storey, three-bay gate lodge located on Captains Road, at the entrance to Forkhill House. It dates to around 1840, with subsequent alterations.
The lodge has a rectangular plan and is aligned SW-NE. It features a pitched roof covered in natural slate, with decorative bargeboards incorporating a perforated cross detail and exposed rafter tails. Two cement-rendered chimneys are visible – one to the left gable and the other on the party wall between the bays. The walls are lined with cement render. The principal, SE-facing elevation has windows that are top-hung timber casements with granite cills. The left bay includes a projecting porch with a 2x4 panelled timber door on the front face, and narrow cast-iron Gothic lattice windows on each cheek. The middle and right bays each have a central window. The gables on the left and right sides are blank. The rear elevation is wet-dashed and has a 2/2 sliding sash window to the left bay, featuring machined brick jambs and head. A monopitched lean-to return, with a natural slate roof and a timber door on the front face, abuts the middle bay and the left half of the right bay. The remaining portion of the right bay is blank.
An Ordnance Survey map from 1835 shows a building, likely a gate lodge, associated with Forkhill House. Around 1840, the estate was sold to Henry Alexander, who extended the lodge by a bay and added the ornate cast-iron lattice windows. In 1880, Henry Alexander’s son, Captain Granville Henry Jackson Alexander, added the decorative bargeboards. The building is currently used as a gate lodge and is noted as being in a derelict condition.
