Description

This is an 18th-century gate lodge, likely dating from between 1760 and 1779, situated within a well-preserved group of estate buildings. It is a two-bay, single-story building constructed of stone and features gabled ends. The building is part of the Springhill estate, which became the property of the National Trust in 1957.

The south elevation, which serves as the entrance, features a centrally placed pointed doorway with a small, shuttered opening at the apex of the gable. The walls are roughcast rendered and painted white and have plain timber bargeboards with an overhang. The north-east elevation has two bays of 12-pane double-hung sliding sash windows with criss-cross astragals above. The other walls are windowless and match the gable's finish. The roof is natural slated, gabled, and features a central chimney stack on the ridge with a single pot. A half-round metal gutter and a single downpipe are also present.

The lodge is located near the gate pier and screen wall but is separate from them. The piers are tall and square with curved pyramidal tops, constructed of random rubble and attached to a screen wall. The screen wall is built of random rubble and runs at right angles for a short distance before curving convexly towards Springhill Road. The metal gates are of modern design. The entrance gateway itself may be earlier than the lodge and predate other entrances on the estate. Dean suggests a construction date of around 1790 and notes that there were originally a pair of lodges with gables facing each other across the avenue. The lodge is situated in the townland of Ballindrum. The listing includes the lodge itself, along with its gates, piers, and screen walls.
