Farmyard, Springhill, Springhill Road, Moneymore, Magherafelt, Co Londonderry

This is a late 17th and mid-18th century farmyard, with later additions likely dating to the early 19th century or later. The farmyard is rectangular and enclosed by a wall, incorporating three buildings.

Two buildings, each five bays long, and one building of seven bays form part of the enclosing wall. The building at the northwest corner is one-and-a-half storeys high. Its wall overlooking the farmyard features a central, sheeted, square-headed door and, on either side, two double-hung, four-pane sash windows. A double-hung, four-pane sash window is high up in the gable facing the farmyard; the outward-facing wall features a large sliding door and a double-hung, four-pane sash window in the gable. The walls facing the farmyard are harled and painted white, while the other walls are of random rubble stonework with brick trim around the openings. The roof is natural slate with half-round gutters and a single downpipe for each gutter.

Along the northeast wall is a seven-bay piggery abutting the first building. The farmyard-facing wall has seven evenly spaced arched, low doorways, except for the end opening. This wall is harled and painted white with a black plinth, and has a lean-to roof of natural slates. Exposed random rubble stonework is visible on the gable facing the yard and the long wall facing the field. The southeast wall separates the farmyard from a walled garden and encompasses a five-bay stable with five segmental-headed openings. This wall is harled and painted white with a black plinth, while the gables are of random rubble stonework. It has a lean-to roof of natural slates, a half-round gutter, and a single downpipe.

The Barn (listed separately, HB09/06/024C) forms part of the enclosure on the southeast side. A kinked wall of random rubble joins it to the stable block, incorporating a gated opening leading to a path and house. Two large gateways provide access to the farmyard; one is located at the west corner, adjacent to the barn, and the other is at the eastern corner, leading to the fields. Each gateway is flanked by tall, round pillars of random rubble with flat, conical tops and wrought iron gates. A cast iron pump with a handle, manufactured by Magee of Belfast, stands in front of the piggery. The farmyard occupies approximately 0.24 hectares at the northeastern extremity of the estate buildings.

The 1832 Ordnance Survey map depicts the farmyard, and while the farmyard itself is likely late 17th or mid-18th century, the buildings within, excluding the barn, may date to around 1820.

The listing includes the stables, piggery, store, enclosing wall, gates, and piers.
