Description
A lime-rendered masonry gate screen marks the entrance to Forkhill House (listed building reference HB16/15/031A) and adjoins the gate lodge (HB16/15/031D). It stands aligned northwest-southeast along the east side of Captains Road, featuring lime-rendered rubble granite walls laid in courses, ashlar granite quoins, and oversailing coping stones. A four-centred archway, constructed with ashlar granite jambs, voussoirs, and a keystone, supports a pair of tall cast-iron gates. These gates are topped by fleur-de-lis finials and a quatrefoil panel, surmounted by a later row of flower heads. The gate screen is abutted by a low rubble stone boundary wall with stone copings.
The screen likely dates from around 1840, coinciding with the enlargement and refurbishment of the adjoining gate lodge. The architectural interest of the gate screen lies in its style, proportions, plan form, setting, and group value. It also holds local historical interest. It is a private property.
