Description
This lime kiln is located on a lane leading to 186-192 Head Road, Annalong, Newry, County Down. Construction is primarily of rounded granite fieldstones, with a squared granite rubble frontage. The kiln pot remains visible, although heavily overgrown, and the draw hole is partly buried and obscured by recent dumping. It appears there was no loading ramp.
A lime kiln is depicted on the 1834 Ordnance Survey 6-inch map. Local recollection indicates the kiln was operational around 60-70 years ago. It is believed that raw limestone was likely brought from an outcrop at Mill Bay. The 1970 survey card describes the kiln as constructed of granite boulders and roughly squared stone, with grey wall construction, and notes a granite lintel spans the kiln opening, with two smaller lintels inside. A circular flue is open, and the frontage measures 15 feet. The kiln is recorded as derelict and is of industrial archaeological interest. It dates from approximately 1820 to 1839.
