St. Mary’s Church, Bloody Bridge, Ballagh Road, Newcastle, Co Down, BT33 0LA

St. Mary’s Church, near Bloody Bridge, is a former church situated in the townland of Ballaghanery Upper, Newcastle, County Down. While the date of the present structure is unknown, a record from 1615 references a "Capella de Balloch-enevry" in the area, suggesting a medieval origin. The building is marked as a ruin on an Ordnance Survey map from 1834. An etching from 1844 depicts stonework above the chancel arch, and a survey card dates part of the arch’s rebuilding to 1972. The church was one of several chapels associated with the medieval Plebnia of Kilkeel, alongside chapels at Kilcoo, Kilmegan, Tamlaght, and Greencastle. Currently, only a semicircular chancel arch remains upstanding, constructed of split Silurian rubble. The outline of the nave walls is visible in the ground, and ancient gravestones are scattered around the field. It is recorded as derelict and is designated a scheduled monument (Down 49:12).
