Description

This timber-framed chalet, erected between 1920 and 1939, is now in very poor condition and of social interest. The building faces east and is accompanied by lean-to additions to the north and south sides, all supported by brick piers. The roof is felted, with overhanging eaves and a central brick chimney located near the right lean-to. The walls are sheeted with horizontally laid tongue and groove boards. The east elevation is gabled and projects forward, divided into four equal panels; the extreme left panel contains the main entrance door, approached by steps, while the others originally held windows that have lost their glazing. The gables of the lean-to sections each contain a 2/2 window. The north elevation features three pairs of single-paned, top-hung windows, alongside two top-hung 1/1 windows. The south elevation has been entirely removed, but was likely similar in design. The lean-to extensions project at the rear, forming a small yard. The rear gable of the main building includes a glazed door leading to the kitchen, and a large casement window.

The hostel was constructed in 1933. A postcard dating to around 1940, held by the Youth Hostel Association of Northern Ireland (YHANI), indicates that the fenestration of the main gable was later extended to ground level. The design closely resembles a building designed in 1931 for the Youth Hostel Association in Wales by Clough Williams Ellis, suggesting his plans served as a basis for numerous hostels built by the YHA during the 1930s. The building was formerly used as a hotel and is now again operating as one. It is located in the townland of Ballaghanery Upper.
