Description
The building is a small, single-storey, two-bay dwelling likely dating to between 1780 and 1799. It is situated high on the edge of the mountains, sheltered on a hillside within a complex of overgrown fields and facing south-east. The exterior walls are constructed of random granite rubble fieldstones. The roof is pitched and covered with corrugated metal, and a random rubble chimney is located on the left gable.
The building probably began as a single-roomed dwelling. The wall separating the kitchen and bedroom appears unusually thick, suggesting it may have originally been an external gable. The bedroom is of simpler construction, with little mortar evident in the joints of the gable and rear wall. Large cornerstones are visible on the left gable and at the doorway, features typically used to mark the corners of buildings, supporting the original single-room configuration.
The south-east elevation features a central metal door flanked by two-paned fixed windows, now protected by sheet metal shutters bolted to the timber window frames. All other elevations are plain.
A building is depicted at this location on an Ordnance Survey map from 1834. The property has been used as a holiday cottage since the 1940s and previously served as agricultural storage. It is thought to be the sole remaining structure from a 19th-century eviction clearance. Further down the hillside, a complex field system and the foundations of other dwellings are visible.
