Description

Number 183 South Promenade is one of a terrace of twelve small two-storey houses known as 'Widows' Row', built in 1843 on the south-west side of South Promenade at the southern end of Newcastle, County Down. The houses were constructed for the families of local fishermen who drowned in a severe storm off the coast in January 1843, when 46 Newcastle men perished, leaving 27 widows, 118 orphans and 21 dependants. An appeal and a substantial donation from the trustees of the Annesley Estate provided sufficient funds to build the terrace. Originally, each house consisted of two rooms, one on each floor.

The terrace retains significant original character and detailing as a group, including gabled half-dormers to each dwelling, vernacular Georgian multi-paned windows and a low stone boundary wall enclosing individual gardens to the front. Number 183 is positioned near the south-east end of the terrace.

The front north-east facing façade is rendered in rough cast and painted, though partly obscured by ivy growth. It features a modern flat-roofed glazed porch extension to the left on the ground floor, with a modern-framed window to the right. The first floor contains a similar modern-framed window set within a gabled half-dormer. The gabled roof, covered in natural slate with exposed rafter ends and an overhang, contains a single rendered chimney stack shared with the neighbouring property to the north. The rainwater goods are a mixture of cast iron and PVC.

The rear of the property has been substantially altered by a modern two-storey flat-roofed extension that rises almost to roof ridge level, obscuring the original rear wall and rear roof slope. The front boundary wall is rendered and encloses a small garden; this wall may have been increased in height compared to those of neighbouring properties. The listed extent includes the house and the boundary wall to the front.
