Description

177 South Promenade is one of twelve small, picturesque two-storey houses in a terrace known as 'Widows' Row', built in 1843. The terrace stands on the south-west side of South Promenade at the southern edge of Newcastle, County Down, and was constructed for the families of local fishermen who perished in a fierce storm off the coast in January 1843. That disaster drowned 46 Newcastle men, leaving behind 27 widows, 118 orphans and 21 dependants. An appeal, together with a substantial donation from the trustees of the Annesley Estate, raised sufficient funds to build these twelve houses.

The house is located in the middle of the terrace. The front north-east facing façade has a modern glazed door to the right on the ground floor, with a window to its left in a modern frame. The first floor left contains a similar window set within a gabled half-dormer. The front is finished in 'salt and pepper' pebbledash render. The gabled roof has an overhang and rafter ends are exposed. A single rendered chimney stack, shared with the neighbouring house to the south, rises from the roof. The front boundary is enclosed by a cement rendered stone wall defining a small garden.

Although substantially altered to the rear, the terrace as a whole retains significant original character and detailing, including the gabled half-dormers to each dwelling, vernacular Georgian multi-paned windows and the low stone boundary walls enclosing individual front gardens. Each house originally consisted of two rooms, one to each floor. Most properties have been greatly enlarged in recent years with modern two-storey extensions to the rear. No. 177 was undergoing major renovation and extension at the time of listing in 1999. Little original internal detailing remains; windows and doors throughout are modern. There are no rainwater goods present.
