Description
167 South Promenade is a small, picturesque two-storey house, one of a terrace of twelve known as 'Widows' Row', built in 1843. The terrace stands on the south-west side of South Promenade at the southern end of Newcastle, County Down, and was erected to house the families of local fishermen who perished in a fierce storm off the coast in January 1843. In total, 46 Newcastle men were drowned, leaving behind 27 widows, 118 orphans and 21 dependants. An appeal and a substantial donation from the trustees of the Annesley Estate raised sufficient funds to construct these twelve modest houses.
No. 167 is situated near the middle of the terrace. The front north-east façade features a timber-sheeted stable door to the left on the ground floor, with a multi-pane 'vernacular Georgian' fixed-light window to the right. The first floor right has a similar window set within a gabled half-dormer. The front façade is finished in roughcast render and painted. The original rear wall is completely obscured by a modern two-storey flat-roofed extension which rises above eaves level. The gabled roof has an overhang and is covered in natural slate to the front with asbestos slate to the rear, with exposed rafter ends. A single rendered chimney stack is shared with the neighbouring property to the north. The building includes a mixture of cast iron and PVC rainwater goods. A low rendered wall encloses a small garden to the front.
Although substantially altered to the rear, the terrace as a whole retains significant original character and detailing, including the gabled half-dormers to each dwelling and the low stone boundary wall enclosing individual front gardens. Each house originally consisted of two rooms, one to each floor, but in recent years most properties have been greatly enlarged with modern two-storey extensions to the rear.
