Description
This is a small, Gothic-style Roman Catholic church built in 1845, located on the southwestern side of High Street in Donaghadee. It is set back from the surrounding terraces and is currently derelict, partially exposed to the elements, but retains much of its front facade.
The front, northeast gable features a central, now blocked, pointed doorway with a simple stone surround. Metal brackets are now attached to this former doorway, and above it is an upper pointed arch recess with a matching stone surround. This recess is adorned with a decorative, scallop-shaped panel inscribed 'Erected A.D. 1845'. Flanking the front facade are tall, narrow, now blocked, lancet recesses originally containing windows, both with stone surrounds. The gable has a moulded verge and frieze, with corbels marking the lower angles. The facade is finished with lined render and painted. A decorative stone cross surmounts the gable. The southeast facade is blank and finished with lined render. The northwest facade also has lined render, but features three evenly spaced, semicircular-headed window openings without frames; the two outer openings are taller. The rear gable is largely covered in ivy and has a window opening set at a high level, along with remains of a vestry. The gabled roof originally had Bangor blue slates, but a large section has now collapsed, and the remaining roof timbers have lost many of their slates. A low, rendered wall with simple wrought iron railings runs in front of the church, now level with the High Street terraces. A holy well is located to the rear of the building. The church was abandoned following damage sustained in a 1972 bomb attack, though its overall shell and Gothic front facade remain largely intact.
The church was founded in 1845 with the Reverend McAlea as its first priest and remained in use until the 1972 bombing. A well behind the church is believed to have possessed healing qualities and was likely in use during medieval times.
