Description
Ballagh Bridge, on Ballagh Road in Newcastle, County Down, is a bridge primarily notable for its relationship with the earlier bridge it replaced (reference HB 16/01/003). Constructed between 1860 and 1879, it offers a contrasting style and level of construction compared to its predecessor.
The bridge carries the main Newcastle to Kilkeel road over the Crock Horn Stream. It is built of split Silurian rubble, with regularly coursed stonework to the abutments, and features finely dressed granite quoins and voussoirs. Granite block coping defines the parapets, and the upstream banks are faced with concrete.
The bridge appears on the 1901 Ordnance Survey six-inch map, with short lengths of road shown on either side, but is absent from the 1859 edition, confirming its late 19th-century date. The bridge holds interest from an industrial archaeological perspective.
