Milestone, Outside 408 Glasdrumman Road, Annalong, Newry, Co Down, BT34 4QW

This is a dressed granite milestone located on the west side of the Newcastle–Kilkeel road, outside the entrance to 408 Glasdrumman Road, Annalong, near Newry. It is one of 17 surviving milestones originally marking the route between Newry and Newcastle, a group thought to be a unique survival in the province. The milestone appears as a roughly rectangular post, approximately 23cm square, rising 60cm above the ground and capped with a pyramid. The inscription '21', measuring approximately 9cm in height, is incised on the three faces visible from the road. This number indicates the distance, in Irish miles, from Newry. The stone has been slightly repositioned due to road widening.

The milestone first appears on the Ordnance Survey map of 1901. Based on its use of the Irish mile measurement, it was almost certainly in existence by 1859, though not recorded on that map. It likely dates from the late 1700s or early 1800s, though precise dating is uncertain due to the ambiguity of earlier road maps. The milestone possesses industrial archaeological interest.
