Description
This is a single-storey, three-bay vernacular farmhouse facing east, constructed around the years 1800-1819. The exterior is built of random rubble granite fieldstones, lightly dashed and whitewashed. It features a traditional direct-entry plan with rooms positioned on either side of a central kitchen unit. The house is notable for retaining its original pegged roof trusses and rope thatching, making it a rare example in the Mourne region and of national architectural interest due to its representation of regional vernacular architecture. The elongated form suggests a linear development over time.
The roof is coped and secured with rope, and rendered random rubble chimneys are located on the right gable and between the first and second bays. A door in the right side of the middle bay leads to the kitchen. Single windows, lacking original frames, are present in each bay of the main façade, with granite cills. The gables and rear elevation have no openings. An outhouse adjoins the left gable. The building is currently derelict, and the thatched roof, partially covered with felt, is in poor condition, although the underlying roof timberwork remains original.
An Ordnance Survey map from 1834 depicts a smaller building on the site, which was substantially extended lengthways by 1859 to match the dimensions of the present house. Records from 1863 identify John Cousins as the occupant, leasing the property from the Earl of Kilmorey. The building was valued at a modest rate of 15 shillings, with no information provided regarding its size or quality. Historical records indicate the site was occupied by a building shown on the 1834 Ordnance Survey map, which was subsequently extended in 1859.
