Description
The Green is a long, single-storey vernacular dwelling of probable pre-1834 origin, situated on the east side of a winding lane to the north of Glasswater Road, approximately 1.5 miles north of Crossgar. The front facade, facing roughly south, is asymmetrical. A timber-sheeted door with a small opening, possibly originally glazed, is positioned to the right of centre. To the left of the doorway are two widely spaced sash windows with horizontal and vertical glazing bars, arranged as 6/6 panes but not in a Georgian pattern. To the right of the door are two similar windows, grouped more closely together. Both gables are blank. The rear elevation features a centrally located door, similar to the front, with two windows to the right; these windows have lost much of their frames. The facade has been harled at some point, but much of this has deteriorated, revealing the underlying rubble construction. The gabled roof is now covered in asbestos ‘slates’, and there are four rendered brick chimney stacks. Sections of cast iron rainwater goods remain. To the immediate east of the house are the remnants of single-storey, rubble-built outbuildings.
A building is depicted on the Ordnance Survey map of 1834 at this location, and this likely represents the present house. It was too low in grade to be recorded in the valuation returns at that time but appears in the 1863 valuation returns as the home of William Jackson. Jackson’s descendants remained in possession until around 1931, when the property was acquired by the current owner’s family. The house has been vacant since 1977.
