Description

Rosebank is a long, two-storey farmhouse of probable pre-1834 origin, located at the end of a lane to the south of Glasswater Road, approximately 1.5 miles north of Crossgar. The building was likely raised to its present height in the mid to later 19th century.

The front façade faces north and is asymmetrical in arrangement. A timber-framed conservatory-like porch with hipped roof and finial projects from the rear front, with double doors on the east side. To the left of the doorway are three unevenly spaced windows with sash frames and vertical glazing bars (2/2 configuration), featuring moulded surrounds. To the right of the porch are two similar windows, followed by six slightly shorter versions on the first floor. The randomness of these openings betrays the property's vernacular origins. The front façade is finished in early 20th-century dry dash with in and out quoins. The east gable appears blank and is finished as the front.

To the rear is a large two-storey gabled return, largely of 20th-century construction with mainly modern windows. A large modern single-storey extension extends to the west of the return. The gabled roof is slated and carries four rendered chimney stacks.

Historical records show a building on this site in the 1834 Ordnance Survey map, recorded in contemporary valuation records as a relatively old single-storey house with footprint dimensions matching the present property, confirming pre-1834 origins with subsequent roof raising. From the 1830s until 1913, the property was held by the Clarke family, after which it was acquired by the present owner's father. The dimensions and front façade arrangement of the original section match those of an abandoned farmhouse on the opposite side of Glasswater Road, suggesting the same builders may have been responsible for raising the roof of both properties.
