Description
Springbrook is a compact, relatively plain, two-storey gabled farmhouse dating to the 1870s. It is situated at the end of a long lane to the south of Ballykeel Road, approximately four miles west of Downpatrick. The house has a symmetrical east-facing front façade constructed of painted rubble with brick dressings to the windows. The central ground floor features a panelled timber door with large sidelights and panelled aprons, topped by a large three-pane fanlight. The doorway is framed by simple pilasters that support an entablature with a cornice. A sash window with vertical glazing bars (2/2) is located to the left of the doorway, and a similar window is to the right, with three more windows on the first floor. The south gable is plain, finished in unpainted render, and has no openings. The north gable is similarly finished in render and contains a small, modern-framed attic window. A two-storey hipped roof projection is centrally positioned on the rear elevation, featuring small, modern-framed windows on all faces of the first floor. The ground floor south face of the projection has a partly glazed door, while the north face has a large modern window. A single-storey gabled extension is located to the west, with windows with modern frames on its west and north faces. The rear façade of the main house, to the left of the projection, has a sash window on the first floor and a larger modern window on the ground floor; to the right are sash windows on both floors. This rear elevation is finished in plain render, partly painted. The roof overhangs slightly with plain bargeboards and is covered in natural slate, as are the roofs of the projection and extension. Two brick chimney stacks are located on the main gables. The rainwater goods are a mixture of cast iron and PVC. Outbuildings are located to the rear.
The house was built in the 1870s, replacing an earlier dwelling depicted on Ordnance Survey maps of 1834 and 1858.
