Description
This is a small, picturesque, late Victorian/Edwardian signal box, dating from circa 1897, built into an embankment alongside a now-infilled railway cutting. It has group value with the former Tullymurry station grouping. Located approximately four miles southwest of Downpatrick, it sits to the east of the former station, north side of Ballydugan Road. The signal box is now used as a shed, with much of the glazing broken.
The building has two levels. The ground floor is constructed of brick, while the rear of the first floor is also brick, and the front is largely glazed. A set of stone steps on the west side lead to the first floor. The south front features a centrally recessed panel with shouldered reveals, containing a timber-sheeted door with a small view panel protected by metal bars. The east side is blank, the rear is built into the embankment, and the west side is brick with a set of stone steps rising to the first floor. At the head of the steps is a centrally located plain-sheeted door to the left, a plain brick panel to the right and a fully glazed section. The window frames are timber and appear to be fixed. The south face is entirely glazed. The gable is timber-sheeted. The east side has strip glazing on the left and a plain brick panel on the right. The north face has a projecting chimney breast centered, with otherwise plain brickwork. The slated roof has overhanging eaves and a decorative tall wooden finial at the apex.
The signal box was constructed in 1897, likely to designs by G.P. Culverwell, engineer for the Belfast & County Down Railway. It replaced a station built in 1871 by the Down District & Northern Railway. The station, and subsequently the signal box, was intended to accommodate increased traffic to and from a Ballykinlar army base, with goods sidings extended for military traffic during World War I. The station closed in 1950, and the signal box has appeared to be used as a shed since that time. The listing includes the signal box and the associated steps.
