Description
This is a relatively small, single-story former railway goods shed dating from around 1897, with a large, modern lean-to extension. It's situated next to the former Tullymurry station, on the south side of Ballydugan Road, approximately 4 miles southwest of Downpatrick. The building is now used as a metalworking shop.
The shed is a simple gabled stone structure, notable for the arched openings on each gable, which are dressed with cut stone. Each opening contains a sliding door: the western door is sheeted in timber, while the easterly door is corrugated iron. The walls are constructed from random mixed rubble with dressed quoins. A large door opening is located on the north wall's left side, while the south side is obscured by the modern concrete extension. The roof is slated, and the railway goods are made of cast iron. To the east of the shed stands a small, apparently complete railway crane.
The station complex, built in 1897, likely used designs by G.P. Culverwell, engineer for the Belfast & County Down Railway. It replaced an earlier station from 1871 constructed by the Down District & North Down Railway, intended to handle increased traffic to and from the Ballykinlar army base. Goods sidings were extended during World War I to accommodate military traffic. The station closed in 1950, and the shed subsequently served as a store before its current use. This shed is of industrial archaeological interest and has group value with the adjacent former Station Master's house and signal box.
