Description
This is a relatively small, two-storey, end-of-terrace house and shop of possible pre-1834 origin, located at the end of a short terrace on the east side of Main Street in the village of Clough. The building has a generally vernacular feel and has lost much of its original fabric.
The front (west) façade is asymmetrical. A plain door is positioned slightly left of centre, alongside a shop window with eight panes (4/4) featuring segmental heads to the upper portion of the frames. To the right of the shop window is a small sash window with a plain top sash and a single horizontal astragal at the bottom. The far right of the facade is marked by a timber-sheeted coach arch. The first floor features three evenly spaced sash windows, each with two horizontal astragals (2/2), and a cement window band. The upper portion of each window is finished with dry pebbledash, while the lower portion is in lined render, separated by a projecting stringcourse. Moulded quoins are present to the left and right of the ground floor. The south gable is blank and finished in roughcast, with ivy covering the top right corner. The roof is covered with natural slate, and rainwater goods are a combination of PVC and cast iron. The roof has a slightly steeper pitch, with a tapering lead flashing where it joins the roof of the adjacent building. Small rendered chimney stacks are located at either end of the ridge. Access to the rear was not possible.
Buildings are recorded along this stretch of Main Street in the valuation of around 1836, and it is possible this property was one of them, although matching the ground plots in the valuation plan with those of today is difficult. The vernacular appearance of the façade suggests construction before the mid-19th century. The presence of a late 19th century-style shop window indicates that the building was used for commercial purposes during that period.
