Description
This is a relatively small, two-storey terrace house dating from circa 1840, located at the eastern end of a terrace on the north side of The Square, in the village of Clough. It possesses special architectural and historic character.
The front (south) facade is symmetrical, featuring a PVC front door centrally placed. To the left of the door is a sash window with 6-over-6 panes, typical of those found throughout the house. To the right of the doorway is a similar window, with three more windows visible on the first floor. The east facade mirrors the front, with two windows to each floor.
At the rear, to the left, a long, single-storey, gabled outbuilding projects at an angle to the main house. This outbuilding has a slate roof, a rough cast facade, and a few small, irregularly placed window openings. Immediately to the right of this outbuilding is a small lean-to porch with a timber-sheeted door and a small adjacent sidelight window. To the right of the porch is a window, and two more on the first floor, matching the front facade. The front facade is finished in unpainted rough cast with moulded quoins, while the rear is finished in unpainted lined render. The gabled roof is covered in natural slate, with two small rendered chimney stacks visible on the gables. Cast iron rainwater goods are present.
To the northeast of the house, a garden is enclosed by a rubble wall with a gateway to the south, featuring square gate piers and wrought iron gates, all seemingly original.
Historical records from 1836 indicate that a single-storey house occupied this site at that time, belonging to James McMullan. The current dwelling was likely constructed shortly thereafter, possibly around 1840. The house and outbuilding are depicted on a valuation plan from circa 1860, when it was occupied by a Rev. David Watson, suggesting it may have served as a manse, potentially for the nearby Non-subscribing Presbyterian church built in 1837. The present owners’ family acquired the property around 1890.
