Description

This is a relatively small, relatively plain two-storey terrace house, likely dating from the 1870s. It was built as part of a larger block incorporating another house and a carriage arch, situated on the north side of Killyleagh Street, near the centre of Crossgar.

The front facade, facing south, is asymmetrical. To the right is a partly glazed entrance door with a plain surround and moulded keystone. To the left is a window with a modern frame designed to resemble the original sash window, also with a plain surround. The first floor holds two similar windows. The front facade is finished with rough cast rendering, featuring in-and-out quoins. A modern, flat-roofed, single-storey extension covers the entire rear ground floor. The rear facade has two first-floor windows with sash frames and vertical glazing bars, finished with a recently applied dry dash. The gabled roof is covered in natural slate, with two yellow brick chimneys, and rainwater goods that appear to be mainly metal.

The building was likely constructed sometime after 1859, based on a valuation town plan of Crossgar with annotations dating from around 1900. The style suggests a date between 1870 and 1880. While the current owner believes the house was originally a police station, historical maps indicate that the police station was consistently located on Downpatrick Street until the latter half of the 20th century.

The interior retains its original layout, including the staircase, floor tiling, joinery detailing in all rooms, original glass, and some fireplaces. The modern rear extension and dry dash finish detract from the original character of the building.
