Description
Raffrey Presbyterian Church is a simple two storey gabled building constructed in 1843, situated within the small hamlet of Raffrey near the intersection of Manse Road and Carrickmannon Road, approximately 3 miles north of Crossgar. The church is surrounded by a small graveyard containing headstones dating from the 1840s onwards.
The front south-west façade is symmetrical, with a pointed arch entrance door at ground level featuring panelled double doors, a pointed arch fanlight with curving tracery, simple surround and label moulding with stops. Directly above the doorway is a small flat arch window with double lancet tracery and simple label moulding. To either side of the front façade are tall pointed arch stairwell windows with label moulding and sash frames featuring multi-pane, double lancet-headed tracery. A projecting course above window level forms a gable tympanum containing a small date stone plaque inscribed 1843. A small chimney sits at the gable apex. The front façade is finished in painted lined render with quoins.
The north-west façade has three tall windows similar to those on the front. To the far right the façade projects slightly with a tall pointed arch recess at first floor level and a smaller semicircular headed recess at ground floor level. This façade is finished in painted lined render with an eaves course and quoins to the right. The north-east façade mirrors the north-west façade.
Attached to the rear gable is a modern flat roofed extension containing the minister's office and toilets. Above this, the main façade has two narrow pointed arch windows similar to but much smaller than those at front. Between these windows is an unusual triangular-shaped window with curved sides, featuring stained glass. The rear gable and extension are finished in painted lined render. The roof is covered in natural slate with metal rainwater goods.
The church is enclosed by a low rendered wall to the roadside with two sets of decorative wrought iron gates, which are included in the listing.
The extension to the rear gable appears to be of recent construction and may have replaced an earlier rear projection. Opposite the church on the south side of Manse Road stands a much modernised two storey house bearing an inscribed plaque reading "Built by JAs McCreery A.D. 1802". A church hall is attached to the south-east gable of this house, and a King Edward VII post box is built into the north-west gable. The cross-roads adjacent to this house is marked as "McCreery's Crossroads" on Ordnance Survey maps of 1834 and 1859, with the house itself marked as a dispensary on the 1859 map.
