Description
The site represents the footprint of a former single-story thatched cottage, likely dating from before 1834, that was demolished around 1986 following a fire. Located on the south side of Saintfield Road, approximately 1.5 miles west of the village of Killinchy, the cottage appears on Ordnance Survey maps from 1834 and 1859-60. It was characterized in those maps as a single-story cottage with a thatched roof and roughcast chimneys. The walls were rendered and whitewashed, and the north front featured three small double-hung windows with square panes, along with sheeted doors between and after the windows. The front of the cottage was approximately 58 feet wide. The building was not included in the first valuation records of around 1835, but the second valuation approximately 1861 revealed it was occupied by Anne Lowry, who leased it from Samuel Lowry. Examination of Lowry Family Estate Papers (PRONI D.2005/1/1-47) provides title deeds to lands in Ballymacashen from 1741 to 1930.
