Description
The site represents the location of a former single-storey thatched house, likely dating from before 1834 and demolished around 1987. Situated on the southern side of Saintfield Road, approximately 1.5 miles west of the village of Killinchy, the house was depicted on Ordnance Survey maps from 1834 and 1859-60.
The house originally featured a thatched roof, rendered gable ends, and rendered and whitewashed walls. The north front contained three small double-hung windows without astragals, with a sheeted door between the second and third windows, accessed by three stone steps. A recent shed addition was present on the left-hand side. The front of the house measured approximately 48 feet.
While not recorded in the first valuation records of around 1835, a second valuation from around 1861 noted that the building had been divided into two dwellings occupied by Isabella and Elizabeth McVeagh, who were leasing the property from a Samuel Lowry. The site is supported by Lowry Family Estate Papers (PRONI D.2005/1/1-47) covering 1741-1930, and Ordnance Survey maps from 1834 and 1859-60.
